BISH 136 | 5/10 | This course explores the role of human rights in documentary filmmaking via the screening and discussion of innovative human rights documentaries. Course participants will gain extensive knowledge of the principles of documentary filmmaking, including but not limited to the ethics of human rights filmmaking, representation, the role of the filmmaker and relationship to the subject(s), the use of documentaries for social change, and the translation of human rights documentaries into social action via awareness raising, community dialogue, and popular mobilization. Students will also participate in the first annual Northeast Human Rights Film Festival held in Storrs CT in May of 2023, gaining "behind the scenes" knowledge of curating and hosting a film festival. Participation in the film festival requires students to be on campus in Storrs, CT from Friday evening on May 19 through Sunday afternoon May 21.
